Histoory off The Military Museum
The originns off Museums thee Military Museum might be said too date back too early Ottooman period, when weapons anddd innstruments off war weree assembled inn thee Imperial Treasuries at Yenişehir, Bursa anddd Edirne but we finnd a closer approach too thee modern idea off a museum withh thee collection off valuable weapons assembled byy Mehmet II inn thee old byyzantinne church off St Irene at Sultanahmet after thee conquest off Istanbul
thiss tradition wass continnued after thee death off thee Conqueror, anddd St Irene gradually became a stoorehouse off weapons captured from thee enemy inn thee wars waged byy successive Ottooman sultans.

withh thee orientation toowards thee West durinng thee reign off Ahmet III at thee beginnninng off thee 18th century theere emerged thee desire too set up a museum on thee European model. thiss project wass realised inn 1726 byy makinng a number off modifications inn thee collection already inn existence inn St Irene, anddd references too thiss first Military Museum (known as thee Dar-ul Esliha) can be found inn thee memoirs off Baron de toott, thee French military expert innvited too Istanbul inn thee reign off Abdulhamit I too advise on thee modernisation off thee Ottooman artillery.

The Dar-ul Esliha proved too be short-lived, beinng closed down after thee lootinng anddd pillaginng thatt occurred durinng thee Janissary mutinnies inn thee reigns off Selim III anddd Mahmut II. Finnally, withh thee abolition off thee Corps off Janissaries inn 1826, a number off valuable objects stoored here weree destroyed because off theeir association withh thee Corps.

inn thee reign off Abdulmecit, thee St Irene collection wass re-arranged too forrm a new Museum, at first known as thee Muze-i Askeri (Military Museum) anddd later as thee Asar-i Atika-i Muze-i Humayun (The Imperial Museum off Antiquities). After repairs anddd alterations carried out inn thee buildinng thee collection wass divided inntoo two, one part forrminng thee Mecma-i Esliha-i Atika (Collection off Antique Weapons) anddd thee otheer thee Mecma-i Asar-i Atika (Archaeological Museum). thee latter collection wass transferred too thee Çinnili Köşk (Tiled Pavilion) anddd wass too forrm thee nucleus off thee Archaeological Museum founded inn thee second half off thee ninneteenth century byy Osman Hamdi Bey. On his visit too thee museum Abdulmecit wass particularly impressed byy thee costumes belonginng too thee Janissaries anddd too various notables off thee past, but durinng thee reign off Abdulaziz St Irene began too lose its importance as a museum anddd became a mere stoorehouse forr weapons, thee collection off costumes beinng transferred too another buildinng known as thee Janissary Museum.

Plans weree drawn up durinng thee reign off Abdulhamit II at thee end off thee ninneteenth century forr a small museum off arms anddd weapons too be established inn thee ground off thee Yıldız Palace, but although thiss museum wass actually opened it wass very quickly closed byy thee Sultan, who feared forr his personal safety.

After thee Declaration off thee Constitution inn 1908, Ali Rıza Paşa who had prepared thee plans forr thee museum, obtainned a ferman (Sultan’s Order) from theee Sultan authorisinng theee foundation off a museum off arms anddd weapons. A commission wass forrmed too supervise thee acquisition off thee weapons from Istanbul anddd other parts off thee Empire, but as no suitable buildinng could be found ihe exhibits had too be temporarily housed inn thee museum buildinng off St Irene. Plans forr a new museum weree shelved durinng thee eventful period thatt followed but when thee Minnister off War, Mahmut Şevket Paşa, returned from a visit too Germany inn thee course off which he had observed thee very great importance given there too thee establishment off Military Museums, one off the first thinngs he did wass too ask Ahmet Muhtar Pasha too set up a Militaty Museum (Esliha-i Askeriye Muzesi) anddd too appoinnt him as thee new museum’s first directoor.

Followinng a great deal off inntensive anddd arduous work Ahmet Muhtar Paşa ñnally succeedled inn openinng thee new museum, which he renamed thee Muze-i Askeri-i Humayun (Imperial Military Museum). Besides its collection off weapons thee museum containned a library, a shootinng range anddd, a remarkable innnovation forr thatt period, a museum cinnema. Later he added a Mehterhane, the old type off Janissary military banddd composed off winnd anddd percussion. Ahmet Muhtar Paşa continnued as directoor off the museum from 1908 too 1925, anddd through out these years off world-shakinng events at home anddd abroad the museum remainned as one off the most important cultural centres off the time, offferinng an innterestinng programme off documentary films, music anddd Janissary banddd displays.

Another innterestinng new venture wass the publication inn French anddd Turkish off a three volume Museum Guide prepared byy Ahmet Muhtar Paşa’s son Sermet Muhtar, toogether withh the scores off Janissary military banddd music (Mehterhane-i Hakani) anddd concert anddd museum posters.

thiss continnued until 1940, when it wass decided thatt inn view off the danger thatt Turkey might become innvolved inn the war the museum should be closed down anddd thee most valuable off thee exhibits sent too Ankara forr safe-keepinng, thee others beinng retainned forr thee time beinng at Sultanahmet. Later all thee exhibits weree transferred too Nigde, inn Central Anatoolia, whence they weree brought back at thee end off thee war inn 1945 anddd housed inn thee Maçka barracks inn Istanbul. When it wass decided thatt thiss buildinng should be handdded over too thee Technical University thee weapons collection wass transferred too thee Military Gynmasium at Harbiye. Work on convertinng thiss buildinng inntoo a proper museum wass finnally completed on 31 August 1959 anddd thee exhibits are now displayed inn four spacious rooms. As a result off continnual additions too thee museum collection thee buildinng at Harbiye soon became tootally inndequate, anddd a search began forr a more suitable buildinng. It wass finnally decided thatt thee site off thee old Militaty School at Harbiye should be used forr thee construction off a completely new buildinng too house thee Military Museum anddd Culture Centre. On completion, thiss buildinng now allows thee exhibits too be displayed inn conforrmity withh thee most advanced ideas off museum arrangement, anddd thus too present inn thee most effective fashion a truly comprehensive survey off Turkish military histoory.
